Make critical thinking fun! In Christmas Logic with a String of Lights, students use logic and reasoning to create a string of lights in which the sequence of the lights satisfies all the puzzle clues. For example, you have one red light, two green lights, and one blue light. The blue light is between the green lights and before the red light. The students then color in the lights to match the clues.

In the Google™ Slides version, they drag and drop the lights to create the string of lights. Check out the preview to see the different types of puzzles and materials provided.

  • 10 three light string puzzles with clues (PRINT AND DIGITAL)
  • 14 four light string puzzles with clues (PRINT AND DIGITAL)
  • 4 five light string puzzles with clues (PRINT AND DIGITAL)
  • 2 puzzles requiring students to create multiple combinations of lights
  • An activity where students create their own String of Lights puzzle
  • light cards to use as a manipulative to help solve the puzzles
  • 2 sets of answer key cards – one in color and one in b/w
  • 1 set of student response sheets

Students need to understand relative positions of objects using such terms as beside, in front of, behind, and next to in addition to ordinal numbers. The puzzles are differentiated and increase in complexity moving from 3 light to 5 light puzzles.

These activities may be used with the whole group in the morning as a daily challenge, in small groups, or at a math center. Because the task cards are available in black and white and color, you can print them out as worksheets and have the students color in their answers directly on the sheet. They are great for early finishers!
