Description

This product has everything you need to teach Vocabulary Acquisition and Use to Primary Students. It is filled with activities for students to practice sorting, classifying, categorizing, analogies, and relationships of spring vocabulary words. The analogy and which one doesn’t belong task card activities require students to be able to explain similarities and differences and relationships between objects.

Activities begin at the lowest level – sorting, and move to classifying, and finally, to completing analogies and identifying words or objects that do not belong to a class or set. These activities may be done as a whole class, with small groups or individually in a center. They are great for early finishers and ELL students!

As students create categories using words and pictures, they develop analysis, discrimination, comparison, and logical thinking skills. Identifying similarities and differences helps students see patterns and make connections. Students develop logical reasoning skills when they analyze a group of items and observe their characteristics. They must be able to see patterns and make connections as they sort, group, and classify through comparing things that are similar and contrasting things that display differences.

Materials in this unit include:
• 110 Picture Noun Cards with and without words – these are to be used in activities to sort into categories, open ended sorts, and classification activities
• 23 Sorting Mats with categories and picture clues along with 3 blank sorting mats for you to create your own categories.
• 110 Word Cards to go along with the picture cards for matching and memory games.
Which One Does Not Belong? Task Cards – 28 task cards with pictures. There are four pictures on each card. The students must identify which picture does not belong. There are recording sheets and answer keys to accompany this activity.
• 36 Spring Analogy Task Cards with recording sheets and answer keys.
• Instructions on how to use the picture vocabulary cards to play versions of Old Maid, Go Fish, and Concentration.
